A Graduate's Success Story

Carlos Valencia HVAC/R program

“I feel more secure about my future, and I don’t worry about losing my job, because I know that the education I received from Branford Hall can be applied to many jobs in my field”

Carlos Valencia had been a maintenance mechanic until his employer relocated in a different state and laid off many employees, including Carlos. Carlos began looking for a new job in the same field, but he did not have the formal training that the employers were seeking. Carlos remembers, "The companies that I applied to preferred to hire someone with certification. I knew I had to find a school that would help me improve my skills and prepare me for certification so that I would be more marketable to the employers.”

The HVAC/R program at Branford Hall’s Technical Training Center in Bohemia, NY was the right fit for Carlos. At first, he was uncomfortable about going back to school. He recalls, "I think it was normal for me to be nervous, especially because English is my second language. But it turned out I didn’t need to be nervous. The staff was so helpful. Their support made me feel more comfortable.”

After completing the program, Carlos realized he was now qualified for the types of positions that he had sought out earlier. He applied for and was offered a position at Sears as a home repair technician. "When I applied for the job, I had to take an electrical and mechanical test. I got 100%! The very next day, they called me and made a job offer that was too good to pass up. I have always wanted a job like this, and I enjoy working with customers to troubleshoot their appliances and equipment,” Carlos explains.

What Carlos says about Branford Hall: “I feel more secure about my future, and I don’t worry about losing my job, because I know that the education I received from Branford Hall can be applied to many jobs in my field,” Carlos said. "By getting an education, you give yourself more choices, and you can be a little more picky about the job that is best for you and your family. Someday I might even start my own business.” Carlos offered some advice to other students: “Take your education at Branford Hall seriously. This is your chance to improve your career and really become somebody.”
