As a medical biller and coder, you will be trained in medical terminology, insurance forms, diagnostic codes, procedural codes, and procedures for processing medical claims. In this profession, you may work for a doctors’ office, hospital, extended care facility, diagnostic center, or insurance company.

A Day in the Life

As a health claims specialist, you will handle medical billing and coding responsibilities. In a typical day, you can expect to:

  • Use a computer-based system to assign codes for reimbursement

  • Check and re-submit any claims that have been rejected
  • Organize health insurance claim forms
  • Input data into patient databases
  • Review patient bills and statements
  • Manage Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Rich was not satisfied with his job because there was no room for advancement. One evening, Rich began exploring the local business schools and technical schools to look for a program where he could train to become a Medical Biller. Medical billing and coding was a field that had always interested him, and he felt a new career would give him more possibilities for advancement. At first he became discouraged when the programs he researched were very long and costly. But then he discovered Branford Hall Career Institute in Bohemia, NY.

Knowing that he was ready for a change, Rich went to Branford Hall the very next day. At the admissions office, he met with a representative who discussed financial aid options and course schedules with him. At this point, Rich realized that this dream could become a reality. “I enrolled in the Medical Billing and Coding program that day and I haven’t looked back since,” Rich explains.

Rich was an excellent student and did very well in his classes, earning a 4.0 grade point average! “My teachers helped me reach my full potential. They cared about me as an individual, as well as every other individual in the class,” Rich remembers.

After graduation from the program, Rich started his new career as a pharmacy biller at Shore Pharmaceutical Providers. In a short amount of time, he received a promotion. In his new position as a facility biller, he took on more responsibility and earned a higher salary. "The decision to attend Branford Hall has changed my life. With my better career and higher salary, I can enjoy so many things in life that I couldn't before, like going on vacation!” Rich said.
