breast cancer awareness bake sale, branford hall Bohemia NY

This Branford Hall campus is doing its part to raise funds and awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Bohemia campus of Branford Hall is hosting many school events this month to raise money to help fight the disease. The school will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to the American Cancer Society—Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, which sponsors fundraising walks throughout the country.

Bohemia’s first event was hosting a bake sale on campus on Friday, September 15. According to Campus Director Kimberly Martinelli, many students and staff donated yummy treats like, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate dipped pretzels, fruit platter, bagels, and more.

The campus is also participating in a fundraising walk on Sunday, October 15 at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY. The walk is part of “Making Strides of Long Island,” and the school’s team name is the “Branford Hall Crusaders.” There’s still time to join—participants can start the walk from any point on the boardwalk and still walk the entire route (which conveniently ensures that you’ll finish the walk exactly where you parked). You can register to join in by visiting the organization’s home page, through the Cancer.org mobile app, or at one of ACS’s Official Registration Destinations. Check in starts at 7:00 a.m. that morning. Even if you can’t walk, you can donate in support of the Branford Hall team!

Basics about breast cancer

Breast Cancer Month brings awareness to this all-too-prevalent disease. Among women, breast cancer is the second-most-common kind of cancer, affecting about 1 in 8 women born today in the U.S.

If it’s treated early, most women can survive breast cancer. The reason mammograms are so important is that these screening tests (basically an x-ray for the breast) can help find breast cancer early—when it’s easier to treat.

There are numerous organizations and fundraisers with excellent resources and information, including:

Other ways to get involved

There are many ways to support women who have recently been diagnosed, who are undergoing treatment, or who are survivors. Why not consider:

Learn about the risks and symptoms

There are also excellent ways for you to help educate others about the risks, signs, and treatment options available. A good resource to get you started is the free breast health guide from the National Breast Cancer Foundation called What Every Woman Should Know. You can sign up to receive it via email.

Look for future blog posts with pictures from the October 15 fundraising walk at Jones beach!
