Students enrolled in health and wellness career programs show a special interest in helping these young patients
Windsor, CT: The holidays are meant to be a special time for children, and it is heartbreaking when children have to spend their holidays in the hospital. The Windsor campus of Branford Hall Career Institute wanted to do something to help. This season, they organized a toy drive to benefit the children at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. Students and staff joined together to collect and deliver dozens of toys to the hospital to help make the children’s holidays a little brighter.
The list of toys that children requested was a combination of classic toys that children have been enjoying for generations as well as toys that are newer on the market:
- Lego and Duplo kits
- Uno cards and regular playing cards
- Play Doh
- Stuffed animals
- Action figures, Barbie dolls and My Little Pony sets
- Velvet art kits, coloring books, activity books and journals
- Match box cars
- Infant rattles and board books
- Fisher Price Little People sets
- Crayola crayons (small boxes) washable markers, thin-line markers, colored pencils and pens
The Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, located in Hartford, CT, is a nationally recognized, 187-bed not-for-profit children’s hospital. It was named among the best in the nation in the annual U.S. News & World Report “Best Children’s Hospitals” rankings. The hospital accepts toy donations all year long, so that children at any time of year have new toys available during their stay in the hospital.
We hope our donations were able to put smiles on the faces of the young recipients! At Branford Hall, we are so impressed with the generosity of our students when it comes to organizing food drives, toy drives, clothing drives, and other events to support those who are less fortunate. It is not easy to find a way to do this when you are on a student’s budget, but our students find a way. They realize that if a lot of people contribute even just a little, you can make a big impact!
It seems fitting that our students like to help others, because our career training focuses on the “helping” professions. Our health and wellness training programs prepare our graduates for professions such as Professional Medical Assistant, Health Claims Specialist, Professional Fitness Trainer, and Massage Therapist. We also have business programs for Paralegals and Computer Networking Management specialists. In all of these programs, we emphasize the importance of giving back to your community. We are delighted that we were able to give so much to the children’s hospital.
