The North Brunswick/Middlesex County Region

The North Brunswick region may be best known for its close proximity to New Brunswick, home of Rutgers University and Johnson & Johnson. Founded in 1766, Rutgers University was the eighth college to be established in the colonies. More than 100 years later in 1885, the Johnson brothers started a small business in New Brunswick that made adhesive tape and gauze. This business—operating out of an old mill—eventually grew to become Johnson & Johnson, which is still headquartered in New Brunswick today.

North Brunswick is about 40 miles southwest of New York City, giving it easy access to metropolitan areas. Some of the key sights to see in the North Brunswick area include the State Theater, Joyce Kilmer House, the Buccleuch Mansion, the Henry Guest House, and Rutgers Gardens. North Brunswick is ethnically and culturally diverse, with large Italian, Asian, and African American communities.

The Middlesex County region is home to a large concentration of medical facilities, such as the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and Medical School, Saint Peter’s University Hospital, and several large pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Nearby Rutgers University is part of the “high technology corridor” which extends south toward Princeton University. Rutgers maintains over 60 research facilities. On a less academic note, Rutgers is also known for its “grease trucks,” a group of food-truck vendors serving “fat sandwiches” and other popular foods. In recent years, healthier fare is also being sold.
