With mountains to both the east and west sides of the town, Southington is located in a valley only 20 miles south of the state’s capital, Hartford, and 9 miles north of Waterbury along I-84. Southington was a strong manufacturing center until the decline of industry overall in New England. With the construction of I-84 in the 1960s, Southington became easily connected to other cities and evolved into a bedroom community that saw explosive growth in population.
Today Southington has developed into a town with a healthy population and economic balance. The most common industries in Southington include manufacturing, finance, insurance, professional and technical services, government, and healthcare. About a quarter of workers in Southington are still employed in manufacturing, most of which is metal and aircraft.
Southington still has some of its early rural charm. It is home to the Mount Southington Ski Area, the Quinnipiac River flows through the town, and due to the many orchards still present, Southington sometimes goes by the nickname of The Apple Valley.
