The economic center of western Massachusetts, Springfield sits in the heart of the Pioneer Valley. Among Springfield’s top industries are education, health services, manufacturing, tourism, and government, but many other industries are healthy and thriving. Some of the companies headquartered in Springfield are Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., Merriam-Webster, Smith & Wesson Corp., and Big Y Foods Inc. The industries represented are fairly diverse, lending the city protection during downward economic times.

With more than 25 universities and colleges within 15 miles of the city, and six more institutions within the city itself, Springfield is part of the “Knowledge Corridor.” This corridor runs between Springfield, MA and Hartford, CT and has a heavy concentration of hospitals and universities that contribute to the vibrancy of the region.

Springfield sits on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. It is the third largest city in Massachusetts and the fourth largest in New England behind Boston, Worcester and Providence. Settled in 1636, Springfield has several nicknames – The City of Firsts, because of its many innovations; The City of Homes, due to its Victorian residential architecture; and Hoop City, because basketball was invented in Springfield.
