Springfield Students Volunteer for Good Cause…at 6 in the Morning!

Students lend a hand at Rock 102’s Mayflower Marathon to benefit Open Pantry

Springfield, MA – Talk about dedication. When the Springfield campus of Branford Hall decided to take on a service project, they were committed to going the extra mile. Students and staff agreed to volunteer at a community service event that started at 6 in the morning!

Each year, the local radio station Rock 102 holds an event called Mayflower Marathon, where DJ’s Bax and O’Brien broadcast for 52 straight hours from the Basketball Hall of Fame in downtown Springfield. The purpose of the event is to collect food donations to benefit Open Pantry, an organization that has been serving those in need since 1975.

Despite the early start time, many Springfield students and staff volunteered to help out at the event. They collected food donations, loaded boxes of nonperishables onto trucks, and handed out Thanksgiving dinners to those in need.  The volunteers were lucky enough to see Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno at the event, and meet the members of the Rock 102 crew. Everyone agreed it was well worth waking up early. And the efforts paid off. This year’s Mayflower Marathon donations filled three 48-foot trailers!

What Open Pantry Does

Open Pantry works to serve people in need throughout the year. Their programs include a year-round emergency pantry, holiday meals, social services and case management, a teen parent program, and other supportive services for people in need. There are opportunities for donations and volunteering all year round, for any students or staff who many be interested.

In addition to the generous giving to the Open Pantry, the Springfield campus participated in a number of other holiday activities. The school held a potluck dinner and a turkey raffle, and is now in full gear for the December holidays. Halls and walls are decorated, and students are getting ready for the short winter break.

Branford Hall wants to thank all of the students and staff members who participated in the Open Pantry donation event. You helped to brighten the holidays of so many members of the Springfield community. Way to go!

The Springfield campus of the Branford Hall Career Institute houses three career-focused programs: Professional Medical Assistant, Health Claims Specialist, and Massage Therapy.
