Surgical Technology Program Courses at Branford Hall

The Surgical Technology curriculum at Branford Hall gives students the foundation needed to excel in their careers and prepares them for state and national certifications.

Sample courses include:

Title of Course Course Description
Anesthesia / Pharmacology Anesthesia, pharmacology (study of drugs), wound healing, dressing application, energy sources in surgery, and physics/robotics will be studied during this course. The student will practice setting up for specific surgical procedures and the application of surgical bandages in the simulated operating room lab setting.

Law & Ethics / OR Facility

During this course the student will be taught sterilization, disinfection and microbiology. The history of medicine is also studied, along with the legal, ethical and historical aspects of surgery. The student will learn about the operating room
environment and workplace/basic safety. The student will work in the simulated operating room lab learning set-ups of specific surgeries.

Special Senses

Special senses (vision, hearing, etc.) the nervous, lymphatic, endocrine systems, oral maxillofacial, plastic and reconstructive surgery are studied during this course. The student will work in the simulated operating room lab learning setā€ups for specific surgical cases related to the body systems being studied.

Specialty Surgery

OB/GYN, Gastrointestinal, Neurological and Ophthalmic surgeries are studied as well as surgical procedures practiced in the surgical lab. The student learns how to engage in teamwork with other students as required in the operating room.

The curriculum is designed to prepare students with the necessary skills to work in a surgical environment. Studying areas such as sterile technique, anesthesia, terminology, and pharmacology will provide a foundation for the student’s new career. The challenging courses, combined with a real-world externship¹, prepare students to work in the perioperative setting.

¹Students in New Jersey will participate in internships.
