What skills do I need for HVAC/R job?
At Branford Hall, we will teach you all the information and skills you need to begin a career as an HVAC/R technician. You will learn HVAC/R fundamentals, installation and repair of AC units, heat pumps and warm air heating systems, and refrigeration. Our courses will prepare you to work on both commercial and residential systems. Here are some of the many things you will learn with us.
Intro to HVAC/R – Learn the current state of HVAC/R technology, HVAC/R safety, use of tools and equipment, and construction methods.
Refrigeration – Become familiar with the major refrigeration systems, the role and types of refrigerants, the regulations pertaining to ozone protection, and conversion to new refrigerant blends.
Air Conditioning and Heat Pumps – Learn how to diagnose electrical control problems found in heating and cooling systems. You will also study correct charging procedures, sizing of heat pumps, and the refrigeration cycle.
Warm Air Heating Systems – Students are taught to trouble-shoot gas, oil, and electric heating systems. You will learn combustion testing, venting and combustion air requirements, installation, and service procedures.
Indoor Air Systems – Learn about duct systems, air distribution and balancing, and air quality. You will study filters and humidifiers and how to calculate refrigeration loads.
Commercial Systems – Our courses cover the installation and troubleshooting of factory built systems, such as air conditioners, air handling units, heat pumps, heaters, refrigerators, walk-in freezers, and hydronic systems.
How do I start my job training at Branford Hall?
Going back to school can be a big decision. Our Admissions Representatives are here to talk you through the process. No prior experience is required—just a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) can get you started in the application process. We have a rolling admissions policy, which means that you can enroll at any time, and within about 6 weeks, you should be starting classes.
Our HVAC/R program is offered at two of our campuses in Bohemia, New York and Springfield, Massachusetts. We offer both daytime and evening classes. The full-time daytime program can be completed in 40 weeks, while the part-time evening program takes 75 weeks to complete.
